The Dead Sea

Our Christmas in Israel

The Dead Sea is about 400 meters below sea level and is famous for being the lowest point on earth and its amazing healing properties. The sea is called "dead" because its high salinity prevents macroscopic aquatic organisms, such as fish and aquatic plants, from living. The Dead Sea is actually a salt lake. It has a single source, the Jordan River, and is not connected to the ocean. The extremely high concentration of dissolved mineral salts in the water causes the water to be denser than that of plain fresh water. Since our body weight is lighter and less dense than the density of the water, our body is more buoyant in the Dead Sea, making it easy to float.Although we were looking forward to floating in the Dead Sea, it was not permitted on the day we visited due to the temperature. However, we enjoyed soothing our skin with the healthful properties of the Dead Sea mud!
